The Schwinn Airdyne Bike - Obsolete or Best Choice?

The Schwinn Airdyne bike has been made and sold since the 1970's. But is it still competitive compared to all the recumbent exercise bikes today with computerized workout routines built in and magnetic drives? Is there a reason why Schwinn can still sell this exercise bike?

The Schwinn Air-Dyne bikes introduced the fan resistance exercise. The concept is simple. You pedal the bike and the pedaling turns a large fan. The faster you pedal, the faster the fan turns and the harder it is to turn. So the resistance increases as you pedal faster.

Also the handle bars are linked to the pedals so the handlebars move as you pedal. You can "pedal" just with your arms or just with your legs or with your arms and your legs together. So someone with a injury can work just the legs or just the arms.

If you push the handlebars and the pedals, you really get a total body workout. The handlebars work your entire upper body in a vigorous workout. You don't just work your arms, this thing works your arms, your shoulders, your back, really your entire upper body. Your lower body is worked on by the foot pedals. So it's a great machine for a muscle workout plus a heart and lungs routine too.

This machine is built like a tank! Every part of the Schwinn Airdyne is nearly indestructible. Every piece is heavy duty. That's why you can find a used one if you look for awhile. You literally cannot wear the thing out. You may get tired of it, but you won't wear it out. Of course you'll need batteries in the electronics and you might wear out a pedal or some minor piece, but this thing is made to last. Even the seat is super heavy weight and durable.

Mine was purchased used and now has 7,000 plus miles on it and except for a little rust from dripping perspiration and one worn pedal, it rides like new. Schwinn doesn't sell two of these to very many people. You can't wear it out.

What are the downsides? The bike is hard to move since it is so heavy. It does have wheels for rolling it around, but it's still hard to move. Secondly, it's noisy. The fan stirs up a lot of air and is loud, too noisy to listen to anything much while you pedal. That's about it on the downside.

Paramahansa Yogananda: Kriya Yoga and Yogoda Satsanga Society

It is heartening to see that the Kriya yoga teachings of the great master Paramahansa yogananda are being spread, steadily and surely, in most cities and towns throughout India by Yogoda Satsanga Society of India. Well known as YSS, this was the institution founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1917 to propagate his teachings on Kriya Yoga. Many devotes who have been attracted to this unique spiritual dispensation have joined YSS as YS Lessons’ holders after reading the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, authored by Paramahansa Yogananda.

In his spiritual classic, the Autobiography of a Yogi, which has been selected as one of the 100 best spiritual books of the century by the worldwide book trade, Paramahansa Yogananda describes Kriya Yoga as the “airplane route to God.” The technique is a psychophysiological method which draws in increasing amounts of life current to rejuvenate the brain and spinal centres. Doing this, it opens up undreamed-of possibilities before the sincere seeker.

A unique and distinctive characteristic of the Yogoda Satsanga teachings is that there is a central set of teachings given by Paramahansa Yogananda that can be practiced by all sincere seekers, both householder devotees and sannyasis. Under the guidance of Paramahansa Yogananda, the personal guidance and instruction that he had given to students of his classes in Raja Yoga during the years 1920 through 1952 were arranged under his direct guidance into a comprehensive series of lessons – the Yogoda Satsanga Lessons – for study and practice in the privacy of one’s home.

Direct perception of God through the faithful practice of Kriya Yoga is the main plank of the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda. Known as the "Father of Yoga in the West", the great spiritual guru spent 32 years in the West, spreading the principles of sanatan dharma - India's immortal gift to the rest of the world.

Today, many of the concepts and methods of harmonizing body, mind, and spirit introduced decades ago by Paramahansa Yogananda have been adopted by scientists, religious and spiritual leaders, and experts in the field of physical and mental health, as well as by the public at large.

More than fifty years after the passing away of the great guru, the spiritual dispensation founded by him continues to grow steadily in India and throughout the world. Today, YSS has more than 160 meditation centers in many cities and towns in India -- an eloquent testimony to the fact that the Kriya Yoga teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda are drawing more and more true seekers to the Kriya Yoga path as the great guru had predicted. The YSS website http://www.yssofindia.org provides detailed information about the ashrams and various centers of YSS in India and presents updates on different YSS events and activities.

Information about Paramahansa Yogananda’s life and teachings is also available from the registered office of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India at 21, U.N. Mukherjee Road, Dakshineswar, Kolkata – 700 076; Tel: (033) 2564 5931, 2564 6208 and from Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, Paramahansa Yogananda Path, Ranchi – 834 001, Jharkhand: Tel: (0651) 2460071, 2460074, 2461578.

Easy Butt Exercises for a Toned & Shapely Butt

Everybody wants a nice butt. And with the right butt exercises anyone can have a good-looking, firmly lifted bum. Men & women, young or not so young, underweight or overweight - getting a nice set of glutes is a function of following a series of targeted exercises that bring about the desired end result.

Yes - there are nutritional considerations as well. These depend on your current state of fitness and your long term goals. So, for now, I'll assume you have a pretty good handle on the nutritional component.

As for the properly structured butt exercise program, which you may not have found, just yet, I've put together a mini butt workout routine which you can incorporate into your current workouts. This routine specifically targets the muscles that lead to very nice improvements in the buttocks area.

Bear in mind, I've been training people since the late eighties. Speaking strictly from experience, I can tell you that the following butt exercise routine is responsible for helping many women dramatically change the appearance of their problem area.

These exercises can be done anywhere, anytime - no excuses.

Lying on your side, do 10 reps of each exercise:
1) Bring both knees forward so your hips are at a 90 degree angle. Then straighten your top leg out in front of you, still keeping 90 degrees at the hip. Lift the top leg slowly about three feet off the ground & down.
2) Straighten both legs so your body is in a straight line. Tilt the hips forward slightly. Lift the top leg about three feet off the ground & down.
3) Repeat on the other side.

On the elbows and knees, butt in the air, do 10 reps of each exercise:
1) Extend one leg straight back with your toe on the ground. Lift that leg up toward the ceiling & down. Then switch legs.
2) Lift your knee off the floor. Extend that same heel back and up so your leg is pointing toward the ceiling & then bring the knee back into you. Then switch legs.

Standing up, do 10 reps of each exercise:
1) Start with your feet together. Step out in front in to a lunge position. Touch the ground with opposite hand. Come back up & step back to the starting position. Then switch legs.
2) Put one foot up on a step (12 - 18 inches high). Slowly step up and down with the other foot. Then switch legs.

If these butt exercises are easy, try going through the sequence twice. If you still need more of a challenge, increase the reps to 15 or 20 per set. Do this routine three or four times per week, and within 2 to 4 weeks you will start to see the changes you are seeking.

By being consistent with a properly structured buttocks exercise program and paying attention to your nutritional intake you can get a super sexy butt no matter what your age or previous exercise experience.

Effective Cardio Workouts In Only 20 Minutes

The perfect workout routine is one that combines strength training and some form of cardio. The problem is, most people hate doing cardio and will make up any excuse not to do it. A popular excuse is not having enough time. This article, however, will show you how you can spend only 20 minutes on a cardio workout and still reap the benefits.

So first of all, why is it necessary that you add cardio to your workouts? Most people understand the benefits of strength training because it adds muscle and muscle makes you healthier, more lean and stronger overall.

But what are the benefits of cardio? Here is a short list that names just a few:

- it helps reduce stress
- it burns calories which leads to weight loss
- it makes your heart and lungs stronger
- it reduces your risk of certain diseases
- it reduces depression and increases confidence
- it gives you more energy and helps you sleep better

To sum it up, adding cardio to your workout improves your health and well-being which leads to a better quality of life. Combine this with strength training and you're on your way to feeling great, fast.

So how can you reap the benefits of cardio in only 20 minutes per workout? It's called Interval Training and it can be applied to many different forms of cardio including boxing, running and biking.

The concept in a nutshell is shorter workouts, but higher intensity. This is accomplished by pushing hard for say two minutes and then slowing down for two minutes. If you repeat this cycle four more times then you have your 20 minutes. You could also do one minute hard, one minute easy and then repeat this nine more times.

Here is an example:

Interval training is perfect for running. If you're working out on a treadmill or running outdoors, it's the same routine. Start out with a warm up jog followed by two minutes of a challenging pace. This won't be your all out because you have to maintain it for two minutes, but a pace that will be very hard for you. You then follow this with two minutes of either a walk or a very slow jog. Repeat four more times and you've got yourself an effective cardio workout in only 20 minutes.

This concept can be applied to many different forms of cardio: two minutes hard, two minutes easy, repeat four more times. Or one minute hard, one minute easy, repeat nine more times.

You'll get your blood flowing, your heart pumping and reap all the benefits cardio has to offer...all in only 20 minutes.

Pranayama The Silence Of Breathing

Pranayama, also known as yogic breathing is the method of silencing the breath. Prana has been defined as the air which flows through the body. Pranayama is made up of three parts: controlled inhalations, controlled exhalations and holding of the breath. When you do all three parts, it is called sahita, while doing only the holding breath without the other two is called kevala. You should start with sahita till kevala comes into being. This is a technique that controls all that is associated with prana.

Our breathing is made of two acts of inhalations and exhalations. These acts are followed in cycles where inhalations and exhalations succeed each other, where you take in air into the lungs and then release some of it back from the lungs. In between the inhalation and exhalation, there is a short gap which usually escapes our attention. This act is called respiration and is usually completed in four seconds in the resting phase. We usually respire nearly fifteen times a minute. You can take in about 400 cubic centimeters or 0.4 liters in a minute. When you do deep inhalations, you take in additional 1.6 liters of air and 2 liters in all. At the time of deep exhalations, you throw out all these 2 liters of air but still your lungs contain another 1.5 to 2 liters of air.

Thus, the total lung capacity of the human body for a normal individual is about 5 liters. The amount of air that you can exhale through deep exhalation after a deep inhalation is called as Vital Capacity. Dividing this number by the weight of the body gives you the Vital Index, which shows the capacity to breathe as well as the vitality of the body and its efficiency in the body’s functions. Regular practice of yogic breathing has been shown to increase yogic breathing. This raises the vitality of the body and efficiency of the bodily functions.
